The focus of this dissertation derives from the interest in the natural
hot springs found on a site located in Aliwal North. In 1960 a spa
developed around these springs and became the main tourist
attraction in the town. Due to the reduced numbers of visitors,
and the lack of maintenance throughout the years, the spa fell
into disuse, buildings became deserted, and nature reclaimed the
infrastructure. A once thriving tourist centre disappeared.

The proposed intervention entails the redevelopment of the existing
Aliwal North Spa to develop a new health and wellness centre. The
aim is to reinvestigate the morphology of thermal baths in a space
that is located between two opposing forces, man and nature,
and connecting users to the endless landscape and hot springs.
